Can We Predict The Eruption Of A Supervolcano ?

Source : www.forbes.com

Scientists say it is extremely challenging to try and predict when a supervolcano might erupt again due to the sheer diversity of events that have gone before.

In a study published today in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment, the authors summarize what we know so far about supervolcanoes, concluding that there is not a single model which can describe how these catastrophic events play out, making it extremely difficult to determine how supervolcanoes may erupt in the future.

Supervolcanoes are defined as a volcano that has had at least one explosion of magnitude 8, the highest ranking on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, or VEI, meaning it has released more than 1000 cubic-kilometers of material during an eruption. The most powerful eruption in modern times was the VEI 7 eruption of the Tambora about 200 years ago. Read more

The Centennial Light Bulb’s Century of Burning Brightly.

The Centennial Light Bulb has been shining bright for over 100 years now. How come it seems like bulbs today burn out in only a few months?

In 1901 what is now known as the Centennial Light Bulb was donated to the Livermore, California, fire department and has been burning almost continuously ever since – one million hours later. With the exception of the occasional power outage and two fire station relocations, the 30 to 60 watt bulb (the exact number is up for debate) manufactured in Ohio by the Shelby Electric Company in the late 1890s has been doing its job without fail.
